History & Hope

The Park Circle Community was designed in 1912 and became heavily populated as a result of area growth through the Navy Shipyard Base that was established during World War II. Remount Baptist Church was planted in 1947 located near the naval base in a predominantly white majority community with a strong connection to military personnel. Over the years, the church reached into mega church status with a membership reaching over 1000. Remount church experienced a strong history of conversion growth and community impact.

Following the closure of the Navy Shipyard in 1996, the economic downturn and relocation of families changes the dynamics of the surrounding communities. This shift of economics, ethnicity and culture transformed this monolithic demographic to become the most diverse and eclectic area in Greater Charleston. The current population of approximately 21,000 (5 miles radius) is split into thirds of Anglo, Latino and African American.

Missional contextualization was not engaged, and Remount Church slipped into decline, experienced hardships and was facing the prospect of closure. The vision and leadership of the Charleston Baptist Association (CBA) was pursued and partner congregations have pledged to come alongside to support and serve to repurpose the church. On July 12, 2020, the members of Remount Baptist Church unanimously voted to be replanted. Missionary leaders engaged the replant process from local and regional churches that formed a replant team to repurpose and revitalize Gospel history at Remount Baptist Church.
